STONE SOUP MOVES INTO ECO-FRIENDLY RENOVATION

3/4/2016

After spending over 10 years unoccupied, a large space on the 5th floor has been renovated and leased to the Stone Soup Cooperative. The renovation, which took two months, has rehabbed the area into the most sustainably ‘green’ space in the building. The result is a low-impact, energy efficient, sustainably designed living space for the community of over 15 people.
Environmentally friendly features include:
  • Brand new low-E windows - the coating on the glass reflects radiant infrared energy which prevents heat from passing through and creates an efficient building envelope.
  • LED lights - an energy efficient lighting option that improves every year, ICA GreenRise is in the process of retrofitting all the building’s lighting. The lighting retrofit efforts were a main contributing factor in the GreenRise gaining Energy Star certification again in 2015.
  • Materials of high recyclable content - in addition to lowering the footprint of this construction, these materials can be recycled if they ever have to be replaced or repaired.
  • Aerators in the showers and faucets - delivering a mixture of water and air, aerators lower water energy bills and can reduce home water consumption as much as 50%.

'Stone Soup Sheridan', formerly Stone Soup Ashland, is one of the three Stone Soup Cooperative houses and intentional communities in Chicago. These communities are designed to provide an affordable and healthy living environment for people committed to social justice work. After the new residents have finished moving in, the 7th floor ICA intentional community is planning a welcoming party.
