Uptown Community Conversation with the CTA

Public transit access is a key development asset in Uptown and under consideration for next phase of the Chicago Transit Authority's much-needed Red Purple Line Modernization Project is a possible multi-year closure of Lawrence station. Four CTA stations (Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn, and Bryn Mawr) will be rebuilt, expanded, and modernized, while adding elevators that provide access for people with disabilities and improve convenience for the elderly and riders with carts, strollers, and bags. Contingent upon funding, construction could begin as soon as 2017 and would take a total of approximately 36 to 42 months.

CTA’s proposal is to shut down the Lawrence Red Line stop for three years or more during both phases of the reconstruction plan. This plan appears to be an unusually harsh measure so we’re looking to engage the community in dialogue around questions of: Why is this necessary? What are alternative transit options? What are your ideas?

Come and join the community conversation! A representative from CTA will be on hand to participate and answer questions.
