EXPANDING CIVIC ENGAGEMENT
The Chicago Chapter of the International Association of Facilitators (IAF) in conjunction with the Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA) are collaborating to help the City of Chicago expand community engagement opportunities in Chicago government.
During the recent mayoral election, Chicago residents made clear their desire for more community engagement in matters of city government. The Mayor has designated his Second Term Transition Team to take a fresh look at how City Hall consults residents in developing and implementing policy. The Transition members will examine, among other things:
- The process of regularly consulting communities on developing and implementing new policy proposals and initiatives.
- The process for receiving input from residents on City services and policies.
- Improving the process of regular communication with residents about City services and initiatives.
The Mayor’s Transition Team is open to learning of the input of the Chicago Chapter of the IAF by formulating various scenarios of putting into place a mechanism to address the concerns outlined above. The ICA will be hosting the workshop at its historic GreenRise center in Uptown and inviting the members of the Chicago Sustainability Leaders Network that it sponsors to attend to increase the level of neighborhood participation in the session’s outcome.
Transition Team Member Former Alderman Deborah Graham of the 29th Ward will attend, listen and take back to her colleagues the group’s input.
The focus question for the workshop is: “What are effective and innovative ways by which the Chicago city government could expand civic engagement in order to improve the quality of city services and programs?”
The session will take place on the evening of Thursday, June 18, 2015, at the ICA’s GreenRise located at 4750 North Sheridan Road at Lawrence. Parking is available across the street. The ICA GreenRise is located on the CTA bus lines #151 and #81, and a short walk east from the Red Line’s Lawrence Ave. stop.
This event is $20 but members of the ICA community are eligible for REDUCED rate
